Bad fats, good fats?

While being on a diet, many people make a big mistake by completely giving up of fat – hoping to really reduce the calories intake. It’s important to remember though, that fat is essential for the proper functioning of the organism. We just need to try and choose the right varieties and not go overboard with the amounts eaten.

Essential fatty acids have lots of functions in our bodies, they help make sure our nervous systems work properly, they have a beneficial effect on the cardiovascular system, they show immunostimulatory and anti-inflammatory properties. They are necessary for the proper fetus development, they lower LDL cholesterol levels, have a favorable effect on the skin condition.

Have you ever wondered why you feel like eating fatty food, like Fast Food? This kind of cravings are a symptom of essential fatty acids deficiency. Our bodies require them, because they are essential for its proper functioning! This is why we immediately think of products and meals rich in fat, like hamburgers or fries, even though these are usually a source of saturated and trans-fats. By eating them, we will not provide what we need and will not meet our needs. It’s therefore recommended to opt for vegetable oils (sunflower oil, rapeseed oil, olive oil), as well as other sources of fats: walnuts, hazelnuts, pecans, pumpkin or sunflower seeds, sea fish.
