Ai Lumi in Trapani, Sicily

IMG_7173xsIMG_7122xsThe location is really great, right in the heart of the old town and near the port. I have eaten there just once, but would definitely come back again to have some more of their gluten-free, well-crafted baguettes. Mamma mia, they were delicious! Drizzeled with olive oil, sprinkled with a bit of sea salt… Mmm, definitely best I’ve ever tried.

I was drawn in by gluten-free options in the menu and the outdoor patio. Ai Lumi is very popular with the locals and tourists, so it was literally packed when I got there. But I decided to wait and did not regret having to stand for over half an hour to get a table. I was seated outdoors which was lovely, because I was able to take in the ambiance of the warm summernight. The restaurant is one very short block from the Cathedral in the center of the historic center on the main street, which is a pedestrian walkway, so the street life was fascinating to watch.

I chose a glass of white wine and a very enjoyable pasta with a tasteful pesto and truffle sauce – normally this sauce is served with dumplings, but in a gluten-free version dupmlings are replaced with pasta. I got a very large portion and the ingredients were undoubtedly fresh. The prices weren’t the lowest, but still quite reasonable.

The waiters were helpful, but worked really hard so sometimes it wasn’t easy to get their attention – not their fault really, they were truly busy, as I said before: the place is quite popular.

I would recommend it purely, especially for the location and gluten-free baked goods.
